  • Plagiarism refers to the practice of not giving credit for the source of one’s ideas or copying directly other people's research results, project statistics or creative proposals. Nowadays, it is not uncommon in China to see that many excellent works are plagiarized by some students and even scholars. It is such an appalling phenomenon that it must be seriously condemned and penalized, because plagiarism not only slows down the progress of plagiarists themselves but also hinders the innovation and creativity of the academic performance and the development of the society. Firstly, plagiarism could by no means improve plagiarists’ academic level but by all means curtail one’s competitive edge. In our society, paper qualification is not a be-all and end-all. Ample emphasis is given to a person’s proven abilities and genuine intelligence. Therefore, one can’t find a satisfactory job through plagiarism. Conversely, it will make you conceited and even lose the motivation to acquire some true knowledge for yourself and this can finally construe the plagiarist’s failure. The same is true of the scholars working at universities or institutes. Crowned as the highly-educated and socially-advantaged elites, some of them also fall in the category of the unscrupulous thieves under the help of plagiarism. But once exposed, their illustrious names will soon become notorious and they can hardly join in the forefront of the academy again for the lack of credit and their own achievements. Moreover, the plagiarism serves as the potential but strong impediment for the innovation and creativity of the development of the society. Suppose all the architects in the world copy each other’s blueprint, then all the buildings will be born with the same appearance. The originally diversified architectural arts may lose the beauty and charm. And if all the scientists plagiarize each other’s ideas and research results, there will be no more genuine scientific achievements and innovative breakthroughs. Attributing to the plagiarism, everyone will be satisfied with the status quo but unwilling to devote painstaking efforts to undertaking further and creative research. And that may be the doomsday of the development of science and technology and even of our world. All in all, plagiarism does exert a tumultuous negative influence on the progress of the individuals and the development of the society. Plagiarism is universally considered to be immoral, dishonest and despicable and thus condemned in the modern academic world. We should respect the scholarship, admire the honesty and penalize the practice of plagiarism.
